Philip Morris Australia has today welcomed the public acknowledgement by the New Zealand Labour government that smoke-free products are a less harmful alternative to cigarettes.
Earlier today, Associate Minister of Health, Jenny Salesa, said: “We are supporting New Zealanders to be healthier by helping smokers switch to safer products, and at the same time protecting people who don’t smoke, especially young people… Vaping is a significantly less harmful alternative to smoking…”
Philip Morris Australia Managing Director, Tammy Chan, said: “It is incredibly encouraging to see New Zealand lead the way when it comes to formally recognising the role smoke-free products play in meaningfully reducing smoking rates, as has been seen in countries such as the UK and the US.”
“Minister Salesa and the New Zealand government should be congratulated for acting on the overwhelming body of scientific evidence that is proving, time and again, that smoke-free products are a better alternative to smokers who would otherwise continue smoking cigarettes,” Ms Chan said.
“While we welcome today’s announcement in New Zealand, it is only further evidence that Australia is becoming increasingly isolated by denying smokers access to smoke-free products. Australia should catch up with the rest of the world by legalising and appropriately regulating smoke-free products.”
